Hamlet calls Gertrude and Claudius relationship ‘incestuous’ and again further heightens his disgust when he meets Horatio ‘the funeral baked meats……… marriage table’.It is this emotional conflict that leads Hamlet to lose faith in all women as he sees his mother as weak. We learn the real reason for Hamlets outlook on life is his father’s death and mother’s hasty marriage.Hamlet shows us he believes the world to be corrupt ‘How weary…….uses of this world’ In Hamlet’s opening soliloquy he shows us his present state of mind.Hamlets remark brings in the idea of appearance versus reality with the suggestion that people are not always what they seem to be ‘Seems, madam….not seems’. Gertrude is also met with the bitterness of Hamlet when she asks why he seems to be grieving harder than everyone else. While Claudius tries to appease Hamlet, he is met with sarcasm and bitterness ‘Not so my lord……….in the sun’. When Hamlet enters he is in a state of melancholy. This could be due to his own insecurity putting on a false face due to the falsity of his rule. Also Claudius shows that he is trying to keep people happy by granting as many requests as he can.Claudius shows his leadership qualities with his quick reaction to the Fortinbras issue.Straight away Claudius shows us his cunning intellect managing to balance grief with joy ‘With mirth in funeral………weighing delight and dole’.

We also learn of the relationship between Denmark and Norway.
